The Saga of a Leader
TRAINER: Oh, good! We need new leaders.
PARENT: I have no time, but thanks.
TRAINER: I'm sure you'll like it fine.
PARENT: I said I have no time.
TRAINER: The training starts on Monday, sign on the dotted line.
PARENT: My daughter's just turned eight, she'd like to fly up now.
TRAINER: The Leader's Guide will tell you, the where, the when, the how.
PARENT: I'm really rather beat, I'd like to take a rest.
TRAINER: You don't know what you're saying, the next two years are the best.
PARENT: My daughter thinks it's time, some camping she should do.
TRAINER: Well G.S. camp is just the place, we'll go along with you.
PARENT: I cannot sleep on cots, it hurts my back and head.
TRAINER: You really needn't worry, you'll never get to bed!
PARENT: My daughter tells me now, that day camp is the thing.
TRAINER: We need a dance director, and someone who can sing.
PARENT: I cannot dance a step, I cannot sing a song.
TRAINER: Well ten days in our day camp, we'll prove to you you're wrong.
PARENT: My daughter is now 12, I've really had it now
I've hiked and camped and cooked outdoors, you name it--I know how.
TRAINER: But can you really say, you haven't had some fun?
Do come and learn about Cadettes, your work has just begun.
PARENT: My daughter is fourteen now, as leader, I am through.
TRAINER: You can't stop now when, Seniors need advisors just like you.
PARENT: My daughter is sixteen and it's time for me to go.
TRAINER: You can't, not now, Ambassadors are our advocates and seek what you
now know.
PARENT: I have another girl, now she is seven, too.
TRAINER: Well aren't you glad you're so well trained. You know just what to
do.
PARENT: Oh, yes, indeed I know, I'm quitting Girl Scouts today.
TRAINER: But surely you have learned by now, you never get away.
TRAINER: And then the sad occasion comes. (S)he ends her(his) worldly care.

Girl Scouts Commemorative Coin
The Girl Scouts USA Centennial Commemorative Coin Act
In celebration of 100 years of Girl Scouting, we need your help to pass
legislation that will authorize the U.S. Mint to issue a Girl Scout
Commemorative Coin. For this to happen, we need you to contact your Members
of Congress to encourage them to pass "The Girl Scouts USA Centennial
Commemorative Coin Act."
Please join the Girls Scouts Advocacy Network and make your voice heard!
Click on "Take Action" at the Web site below, and you will be led through a
few short steps that will generate a letter to your Members of Congress,
asking that they support the Girl Scout Commemorative Coin bill. For this
bill to pass, we will need 290 House cosponsors and 67 Senate cosponsors. We
can reach these numbers, but there is some work to be done! Please take
action and invite others to do so as well.
Take Action! go to: http://www.girlscouts4girls.org/girlscouts/home/

FW: museum Christmas tree
From: Vicky Manning [mailto:babybear-daycare@sbcglobal.net]
Jane
Would you please pass this info on to all Leaders in our neighborhood. Beth said to put it on the web page also. Thank-you, Vicky Manning
Leaders... My daughter and I need help from your troops.
We have been given a Christmas tree to decorate at the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum.
Our theme for the tree ornaments will be Girl Scouts Shore To Shore.
We would like Rockford area troops to make SWAPS for the tree.
The swaps will need to hang instead of pin.
Let your Scouts be creative and keep in mind the shore to shore theme.(examples: sandcastle, water, lighthouse, seagulls, pail, shovel, frisbie, beachchair, fish, kite)
We will also have sunshines printed for each scout to color. We will use them as garland.
Please call or email to let us know if your troop can help and what your swap idea is.
Save your receipts. I may be able to reimburse supplies for the swaps.
We are thinking of putting empty cookie boxes under the tree as added decorations. Please save any boxes you still have.
I will need all swaps, sunshines, and cookie boxes on or before November 3.
The lighting of the Christmas trees is scheduled for November 20 and will be on display through January 4.
This would make a great troop activity.
Thank-you
Vicky and Nicole Manning

7 Girl Scout dates & deadlines
7 things and lots of deadlines! The drop boxes are in place at all three schools (Lakes, Belmont, North Middle) for your use.
1. The Your Own Business IPP is next Tuesday, September 30. We have extended the deadline to register to this Friday, September 26. (I confess I forgot to register my own daughter! Oops.)
2. Leader/Daughter event in Grand Haven on October 4. That deadline to register is also this Friday, September 26.
3. Next Tuesday, September 30 is when you need to get your troops and or girls reregistered. Yes, new girls can sign up later. And of course we'll never turn a girl away. But current year membership expires on September 30 and the new year starts October 1. Get those forms in! ALSO, turn in the brown form with your registrations to get the free new Girl Scout Michigan Shore to Shore rocker for all your girls!
4. If you participated in Summer Trails through the council, that deadline to turn in your paperwork to council is Tuesday, September 30.
5. Speaking of council. While the council offices will be open next week, the council store will be closed Monday, September 29 & Tuesday, September 30. Keep that in mind while doing your own shopping.
6. October 10 – 12 is a Power Weekend at Camp Anna Behrens. This is a great chance to get away from the kids, enjoy a weekend at Camp, AND power your way through a bunch of training. Workshops include: Leadership essentials, Girl Scout Traditions, Outdoor training, Ceremonies, SWAPS, Songs & Games, Troop Management, First Aid/CPR (very limited space), and First Aid/CPR recertification. Cost is $15 for whole weekend or $5 per meal if you can't come for the whole weekend. See the website calendar for more specifics and a registration form. Register by October 3.
7. Join the GSMISTS CEO, Karen Micklatcher, for an information meeting and "Let's Chart Our Course." This is for all registered Girl Scouts ages 14 through Adult. There is no cost. Thursday, October 2 at Faith United Methodist Church (across from Council on Walker Road) or Tuesday, October 21 at Camp Anna Behrens. Actually, there are about a dozen locations. If anyone wants to travel to Manistee or Alpena for example, contact me for the date.

Girl Scout Leader Drop Boxes
Here we go again!
There has been a lot of discussion after this morning’s email about drop boxes. Beverly and I created the boxes, filled them with blank forms, etc and we told that the school principals WOULD CONTACT US for placement. I only heard from NRMS and only delivered that box. Many of you have dropped off paperwork at either Lakes or
However, we did not know that this system was in place, because no one from those schools contacted us. So, tomorrow I will be going to Lakes and to
Remember, that you can drop girl/adult registrations off at Tina’s house or you can mail event registrations to Cindy Wadlow if you would like. And, please, while we are getting all the bugs worked out of this system, just send me a quick email if you have used a drop box.
Thanks for your patience,

Founder's Day - October 31
JULIETTE GORDON LOW
1. Read a story about the life of our founder Juliette Gordon Low.
Information is in the level handbooks. Younger girls can do the suggested
activities in their handbooks. There are also several biographies available
including "The Lady from Savannah" that are available for sale. Check your
local library for other books.
2. Put on a play about Juliette Low's life. Work as a group to create the
script, costumes, and props. Put the play on for a sister troop or another
group.
3. Hold a party in Juliette Low's memory on or near her birthday, October
31.
4. Learn about the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund. For what purpose is
it used? Make a donation to the fund in her memory.
5. Older Girl Scouts could view the video, "An Interview in Time." "Juliette
Low" relates a fascinating story about how Girl Scouting started and why our
organization is structured like it is. (Check with your council to see if
they have a copy of the video available for loan.)
6. Play the Juliette Low Story activity below.
7. All age levels would enjoy watching the video "The Golden Eaglet", the
first commercial movie produced for the Girl Scouts. It is introduced by
Juliette Low and shows how the program provided valuable skills for girls.
The video is available for loan from our council library. Because it is a
silent movie with background music, adults working with younger girls might
need to read the script pages for their girls.
8. Join GreenBlood Traditions. Go to the files section and open the folders
about JGL and the JL World Friendship Fund...lots of ideas there, too.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/greenbloodtraditions
THE STORY OF JULIETTE LOW
Divide your girls into eight groups.
Sound Effects:
LITTLE GIRLS Stand and giggle
JULIETTE LOW Curtsy and say, "Be my friend."
GEORGIA (STATE OF) Say, "Hi, ya'll!"
HORSES Say, "Neigh-h-h."
LORD BADEN-POWELL Bow formally and say, "How do you do?"
LONDON Sing "London Bridge is Falling Down"
BOY SCOUTS Make the Girl Scout sign, say, "Be prepared."
GIRL SCOUTS Sing the first line of "Girl Scouts Together"
As the story is read, each time one of the words listed above is said, the
girls should stand up and make the sound effect assigned to their section.
Once upon a time there was a girl named JULIETTE LOW who lived in GEORGIA
and loved to ride HORSES. After she grew up, she went to LONDON where she
met LORD BADEN-POWELL who founded the BOY SCOUTS. She was fascinated by the
work he was doing. She studied with him awhile and decided to make a group
of GIRL SCOUTS in GEORGIA for her little friends who liked to ride HORSES
and do other useful and fun things. So JULIETTE LOW said goodbye to the BOY
SCOUTS in LONDON and came home to America with the idea that LORD
BADEN-POWELL gave her. She formed a group of LITTLE GIRLS into a troop of
GIRL SCOUTS. They loved it so much that the idea spread and now there are
troops all over the world.
Aren't we glad that a (speed it up here)
LITTLE GIRL named
JULIETTE LOW from

Girl Scout leader drop box
The drop box for registrations and other paperwork has been placed at NORTH ROCKFORD MIDDLE SCHOOL. It is located in the main office and is accessible to you any time that the school is open. Someone from the service team will be checking the boxes at least once per week.
We are still working with the principals at Belmont and Lakes to get drop boxes placed there, so please be patient.
Thanks for all you do,
Beth Reedy

The meeting minutes from the September meeting are available at:

For those who took the CPR class at Alticor/Amway in the Spring, the following note is from Beth Dornan:
Turns out the batch of cards for our leaders who received CPR training in May were sent to Council so the training could be recorded.
However, they were lost (which Joanna Hodges, a leader and GS trainer who works here, uncovered a few weeks ago.) New cards were issued last week and sent to Council to the attention of Kim Dyer.
They should be at Council and hopefully can be sent our way.

School Night for Scouting - HELP
However, I need two things for Tuesday Sept 16, 6 - 8 pm
1) We need older girls (1 or 2) in the following locations. And really, just 1 or 2. Any more and it gets chaotic. Belmont Cannonsburg MeadowRidge ValleyView The older girl will talk to the girls while the leaders talk to the parents. They can do games, songs, craft, SWAPS, whatever. There is some $ (don't go over $10) for this.
If you have an older girl troop, see if some are interested in helping and let me know.
2) We also need LEADERS at Belmont, Meadow Ridge, and Valley View. Belmont and Meadow Ridge have very few troops, hence very few leaders to help out. Valley View shares its leaders with Parkside, so they are covering Parkside.
If you haven't signed up for school night yet, please consider helping us at these schools. We really need to get more troops in these schools!
Please let me know how you can help!
I am in trouble at a few schools.

Monday Night, September 8, is our first leader meeting. We will be at Camp Rockford (directions on website). Bring a chair, sweatshirt, and mosquito repellent.
Fall Product Training at 6 Leader Meeting at 7
It is VERY important that you try to attend this meeting. Lots of prep for the next year will happen at the meeting.
A leader and the fall product manager for your troop needs to attend the Fall Product Training. A lot is all new this year. If you cannot attend the training, you need to contact Amy Zeboor or Lynn Surdock.
REMEMBER: If you have any girls in your troop that might need financial assistance (uniforms, books, events, camp), that girl has to have sold Fall Product AND cookies in order to qualify. You need to take this training so you can offer this to your girls.
See you Monday!

Mileage deduction
Hi Carol Lee,
I sent the suggested letter to the senators from Virginia regarding the
amount you can deduct for mileage for volunteer work and this is the reply I
got. Please note the IRS information toward the bottom. Sen. Warner
suggested we contact them directly with our issue regarding the rates.

Dear Ms. Gardner:
Thank you for contacting me regarding the Internal Revenue Services' (IRS)
standard mileage rates. I appreciate your thoughtful inquiry.
As you may know, the IRS normally reviews and updates its mileage rates once
a year in the fall for the next calendar year. Due to rising gas prices, the
IRS recently issued updated mileage rates effective July 1 st through the
end of the year. As of July 1, 2008, the standard mileage rates used to
calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile is set at
following levels: 58.5 cents per mile for business miles driven; 27 cents
per mile driven for medical or moving purposes; and 14 cents per mile driven
for volunteer service.
The standard mileage rate for business and medical and moving purposes is
based on an annual study conducted by an independent contractor for the IRS.
However, the mileage rate for charitable miles is set by law. To date, no
related legislation has been introduced to modify the determination of the
standard mileage rate for business and medical and moving miles.
While I am not a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has
jurisdiction over tax-related matters, please be assured that I will
certainly keep your views in mind should related legislation come before the
full Senate. You may also want to share your views with the IRS at the
following address:
Internal Revenue Service
1111 Constitution Ave, NW, Room 3241
Washington, DC 20224
Website: www.irs.gov
Telephone: (800)-829-1040
Communications such as yours provide an important means to evaluate the
interest and concerns of Virginians. If government is to be effective,
public officials must be aware of the interests of the people they serve.
Again, thank you for the benefit of your views.
With kind regards, I am
Sincerely,
John Warner

Girl Scout Service Team - we need YOU!
Leaders,
Are any of you (or any of the parents/sponsors/helpers from your troop) able to help us this year?
We are in desperate need of a TREASURER and a REGISTRAR for our service unit (neighborhood)!
Please, if you are able to give us a hand, we’d love to hear from you. Beverly and I will make your job as simple as possible. We can point you to the right training and resources and we’ll be beside you every step of the way. But we know that each of these positions requires some time, some effort and lots of love for Girl Scouts.
Our neighborhood will not function the way it should if are not able to fill these positions. So please give either of these positions some thought and call me if you have questions or if you are able to help.
Thanks for all you do!

Sale on GS patches
I just got an email from Snappy Logos and they have a bunch of discontinued patches on sale. The discontinued patches are only $.49 each! Admittedly, most of them have the year (like, Luau 2007), but some of them don't and could be used anytime!
They also have a bunch on sale (their sales last only one week and the next week something else is on sale) for $.59.
So if you've been busy or still have some summer plans, check out their site and see if they have anything that can help you.
Their website is www.snappylogos.com. Look in the menu on the left for 49 cent specials and across the tabs at the top for the Sale items.

FW: Work Day coming...help needed
HCNC Work Day - Thursday, June 19 from 9-5.
With all the June rain it's getting a little too wild at the Howard Christensen Nature Center! Help is needed especially with weeding, cutting the grass at the Red Pine Interpretive Center and planting a butterfly garden by the Welcome Center.
There are plenty of jobs for people of all interests and ages, from picking up sticks to boardwalk repair. Please let me know if you plan to come and when so that I can have gloves, wheel barrows, shovels etc. ready for you. (Another option is to schedule a date for a group to visit and help maintain HCNC as the beautiful place that it is.)
THANKS!

Girl Scouts - Did you do a service project? Do you have a sponsor?
Leaders,
1. In reviewing the annual troop reports, we have found that many of you did not list any service projects on the report. So we need to ask you to review your accomplishments again just to be sure.
Did your troop assist with another troop?
Did you collect pop tabs?
Did you make cards/tray favors or visit a nursing home?
Did you pick up trash/clean up the playground or plant flowers?
These and lots of other small gestures are service projects – please email with your troop number and project, if they are not included on your annual report
2, Many troops did not list a sponsor – It is important to the neighborhood that each troop have at least one sponsor. So please think about a person/company/institution that helped your troop.
Did you have a cookie booth? That location is a sponsor.
Did a group/organization/company donate cash or supplies to your troop? They would be a sponsor.
Did you have a guest speaker at a troop meeting? That person is a sponsor.
Again, please email me with your troop number and the sponsor name – you don’t need to complete the paperwork
Please respond as quickly as possible – we need to submit these additions to Council by Monday, June 16th.
Thanks,
Beth Reedy
Girl Scouts - Paperwork information
Leaders,
Please be advised that Kelly’s term as Registrar has ended. We want to thank Kelly for all she’s done for the neighborhood and in getting our paperwork completed and submitted in a timely manner.
If you have any outstanding paperwork, please submit it to Beth Reedy and she will make sure it gets to the proper place.
Thanks for all you do; enjoy the beautiful Summer weather!
