Cookie Profits Benefit Others

The Oregonian Thursday, June 05, 2008 Junior Girl Scouts turn cookie profit into gifts.

Junior Girl Scouts from Troop 1884 contributed 80 percent of their earnings from cookie sales to benefit two worthy causes.

The girls, who attend schools in west Beaverton, Hillsboro and Newberg, meet at Cooper Mountain Elementary School. The 9- and 10-year-olds have been Girl Scouting together since first grade. According to leader Suzanne Bick, the girls are working to earn their Bronze Award, their first major award as Junior Girl Scouts.

After netting more than $600 in earnings, the girls voted to donate the majority of it. They went to Powell's Books and purchased $225 worth of books to be sent to schoolchildren in Honduras. The girls had heard about the Honduran children from Cooper Mountain fourth-grade teacher Allison Roth, who does community work in Honduras. Roth had posted a request at the school asking for donations.

The Bonnie L. Hays Small Animal Shelter in Hillsboro was the second recipient. The scouts made a shopping trip to PetSmart to buy toys, flea collars and treats, as well as 160 pounds of food to donate.

Bick said that she and co-leader Corinne Walton were in agreement when one of the Girl Scouts expressed how they felt about sharing their cookie money: "We feel like community heroes."
