We hope to see you this Tuesday, August 26, 2008. Come anytime between 4 & 8 pm. It should only take about 15-20 minutes, but you can stay longer and ask questions if you need to. It's at Beth's house, 5646 Via Nuevo.

Leaders of older girls, if possible, come around 6:30 and we'll have a quick planning session for older girls.

We're looking forward to seeing all of you and updating you on lots of cool stuff!

Leaders,

Council asked that we pass this info on to you.  We received it yesterday so I apologize for the late notice.

Forest Hills Training Facilitator Sharon Hughes is hosting a Troop Camp Training at her home Wednesday morning, August 20, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Interested registered adult Girl Scout volunteers can sign up online at www.gsmt.org (old website) as we have not linked the new training to the new website.  Confirmations will be sent giving Sharon’s address.

Mileage deduction

Thanks to Patti Gardner for this update...

Hi Carol Lee,

I sent the suggested letter to the senators from Virginia regarding the
amount you can deduct for mileage for volunteer work and this is the reply I
got. Please note the IRS information toward the bottom. Sen. Warner
suggested we contact them directly with our issue regarding the rates.

Ms. Patti H. Gardner

Blacksburg, Virginia 24060

Dear Ms. Gardner:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Internal Revenue Services' (IRS)
standard mileage rates. I appreciate your thoughtful inquiry.

As you may know, the IRS normally reviews and updates its mileage rates once
a year in the fall for the next calendar year. Due to rising gas prices, the
IRS recently issued updated mileage rates effective July 1 st through the
end of the year. As of July 1, 2008, the standard mileage rates used to
calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile is set at
following levels: 58.5 cents per mile for business miles driven; 27 cents
per mile driven for medical or moving purposes; and 14 cents per mile driven
for volunteer service.

The standard mileage rate for business and medical and moving purposes is
based on an annual study conducted by an independent contractor for the IRS.
However, the mileage rate for charitable miles is set by law. To date, no
related legislation has been introduced to modify the determination of the
standard mileage rate for business and medical and moving miles.

While I am not a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has
jurisdiction over tax-related matters, please be assured that I will
certainly keep your views in mind should related legislation come before the
full Senate. You may also want to share your views with the IRS at the
following address:

Internal Revenue Service
1111 Constitution Ave, NW, Room 3241
Washington, DC 20224

Website: www.irs.gov
Telephone: (800)-829-1040

Communications such as yours provide an important means to evaluate the
interest and concerns of Virginians. If government is to be effective,
public officials must be aware of the interests of the people they serve.

Again, thank you for the benefit of your views.

With kind regards, I am

Sincerely,

John Warner
United States Senator

Girl Scouts Summer Tuesday Event in Rockford

Leaders,

On Tuesday, August 19, a Girl Scout Summer Tuesday Event will be held here in Rockford.  We’ve planned a Bike/Hike along the White Pine Trial.  The event will be held from 6-8pm.

We need some help to make this event run smoothly.

We need:

2-3 people in the trail parking lot at 12 Mile Rd.

2-3 people in the parking lot on Belmont Rd.

At both of these stations, the volunteers will be registering families for the event.  We’ll provide signs and supplies; please bring your own chair.  You’ll need to be in place by 5:45 pm and will be done at 7pm.

4-5 people in the pavilion at Richardson Sowersby Park (under the bridge)

At this station, the volunteers will make sure participants see the pavilion and will hand out snacks.  We’ll provide signs and snacks.  You’ll need to be in place by 6:30 and will be done at 8pm.

Please call or email me if you can help.  We need lots of help to make this event a success!

Thanks,

Beth Reedy

Girl Scout Service Team - we need YOU!

Leaders,

Are any of you (or any of the parents/sponsors/helpers from your troop) able to help us this year?

We are in desperate need of a TREASURER and a REGISTRAR for our service unit (neighborhood)!

Please, if you are able to give us a hand, we’d love to hear from you.  Beverly and I will make your job as simple as possible.  We can point you to the right training and resources and we’ll be beside you every step of the way.  But we know that each of these positions requires some time, some effort and lots of love for Girl Scouts.

Our neighborhood will not function the way it should if are not able to fill these positions. So please give either of these positions some thought and call me if you have questions or if you are able to help.

Thanks for all you do!
