[leaders] Service Unit updates and news

Dear Rockford Girl Scout Leaders,

Just a few items.

1. Planning update – positions filled and still needed
2. Fun older girl get-together (chocolate!!!)
3. Next planning meeting
4. End of Year paperwork
5. Girl Scout presence at community event

1.  Planning Update:  Thanks to those leaders who were able to come to my house on July 22 and help plan the new year.  We brainstormed some ideas and got some new volunteers.
Good News: Our Service Unit has:
 Treasurer: Kristy Neill
 Secretary & Newsletter: Lynn Surdock
 Day Camp Coordinators for next year: Holly Kinney & Lori Dettloff
 Cookie Sales Coordinators for next year: Jen Shook & Susan Witte
 Several School Reps
 Older Girl Coordinator: Beverly Dickinson
 Fantastic web page & webmaster: Jane Fabiano-Turner
 Recruitment Coordinator: Veronica Antel

Bad News: Our Service Unit needs:
 Director
 Registrar (I'll do it if no one else will.)
 Publicity
 Adult Education Facilitator
 Mentors
 Event Coordinator

We really need someone to step up and be Director.  If we don't have one, Council will run our service unit and have to approve everything.  Do we want council supervising us for every detail?  We need to give council a name.  Please.  Can we maybe get a couple of co-directors to take turns?

Here are the main tasks of the Director.
Monthly meetings at Council (someone has to attend, but we can split among service team)
Run Service Unit Meeting monthly
Paperwork
"Buck stops Here" (to sign forms and make a final decision)

2.  Rockford Service Unit Older Girl Scout Kick-off Planning Event – Chocolate Fondue

Who: Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, Ambassadors, AND their leaders
Cost: $7.50 per person includes chocolate fondue, beverage, & gratuity
Date:  Thursday, Aug 5, 2010 4:00—5:30
Location: Melting Pot, 2090 Celebration Drive, Grand Rapids

Come to Melting Pot, 2090 Celebration Drive, for Chocolate Fondue!  We will greet old friends, make new ones, plan what we want to do this year for Older Girl Scouts, and eat Chocolate!!!    Bring your ideas and your appetite!

3.  Next planning meeting will be Monday, August 9 at Rockford United Methodist Church.  Business meeting from 7 – 8:30.
For all Girl Scout Leaders.  Everyone is welcome.  Service Team members, new leaders, everyone!
Questions: Call Beverly Dickinson at 874-8926 or beverlyd@charter.net.
Topics for discussion:
• Vacant positions – what to do if we don't have a director
• School Night and Recruitment in general
• Training
• Budget
• Events

4.  If you have not done your year end paperwork, council does still want it.  You need to do the following forms which are all on the www.gsmists.org/resources page
• Troop Detailed Cash Report
• Troop Annual Finance Report Form
• And the most recent copy of your troop bank statement

Please drop off at my house, 6237 Arroyo Vista, Rockford, and I will make a copy for our Service Unit and get it to council.

5.  Boy Scouts are celebrating their 100 years in 2010.  Boy Scout Troop 264 is a Hundred Year event on August 26, 27, and 28, in downtown Rockford.  They have been planning it all year and have some great ideas.  They want us to have a tent or booth about Rockford Girl Scouts, which I think will be great for recruitment.  So we need some ideas for crafts (SWAPS probably) and posters and displays and photos etc.  Send me your ideas and we'll talk more about it at the August 9 meeting.

Thanks again for hanging in there with me.
Beverly

PS:  If you are not returning as a leader, please let me know.  But you will have to remove yourself from the mailing list.  Go to our website, www.rockfordgs.com, and click on the mailing list link.  There are instructions to remove yourself from the mailing list.

[leaders] Girl Scout planning for next year

Dear Rockford Girl Scout Leaders,

I owe you an apology and an explanation.  I disappeared there for about a month.  I just was overwhelmed.  I couldn't keep all the balls juggling in the air and had to drop something.  I chose to drop Girl Scouts and just ignored things for about a month.  Not the best decision and I apologize to all of you.

Please rest assured that if you dropped off paperwork or early bird, it was turned in to council on time.  If you have not done your paperwork, council does still want it.  You need to do the following forms which are all on the www.gsmists.org/resources page
• Troop Detailed Cash Report
• Troop Annual Finance Report Form
• And the most recent copy of your troop bank statement

Now, moving on.  For me, that month off worked.  I am coming out of my shell feeling renewed and even a little excited about another year of Girl Scouts.   Jessica and I are making plans for our troop and for Older Girl events.

But now, we must face the question: What are we going to do?  As you may know or suspect, we do NOT have a Service Unit Director.  In fact, we have many open positions.  And if we want to have Girl Scouts in Rockford this year, we do need to brainstorm, make some plans, line up some volunteers, and make some hard decisions.

So, please come to the Rockford Service Unit Planning Meeting.  I promise that this is not an ambush.  Just coming does not mean you will be Service Unit Director.

For all Girl Scout Leaders.  Everyone is welcome.  Service Team members, new leaders, everyone!
Free!  Bring a snack to share!  Pop provided, but you can bring something stronger if you want.

Thanks again for hanging in there with me.

[leaders] Changes to incentives pick-up

Hi everyone!

There has been a change in the date of incentive pick-up.  Susan & I sorted all the incentives yesterday, and Vicki is bringing the missing items this afternoon from Council for us to complete all of the troops orders.  Tomorrow Susan will be in the church office from 8am-noon for you to pick-up.  Because the church is closed 7/6, the next pick-up date and time will be 7/13 from 6:30-8pm in the hall where leader meetings are.

The cookie dough is being mailed to each girls home (the address council has on file for the girl when she registered 2009/2010).  They are swipe cards like credit cards I am told and there has been no specific arrival date, just that they are coming.

Happy 4th of July everyone!!

Jen
