[Leaders] GS camp

If anyone has a yarn they would like to donate for a GS craft I am doing with the Daisy’s at camp please let me know.  I was going to buy some but thought I would ask.  I have purple.  Looking for any other colors and I don’t need a lot so if you have a bit left of different colors that would be great.

[Leaders] Gold Award Project

Hi! My name is Stephani Sawicki and I am a senior at Rockford High School. I am currently working on my Girl Scout Gold Award Project. I am creating a book room / "Learning Library" at St. Johns Home (a residential home for children ages 6-17). In order to make this project a success, I am in need of furnishings for the library. Any book donations appropriate for ages 6-17 are appreciated. Both new and gently used books are welcome. In addition, I  am looking for floor pillow and beanbag cover donations. Both of these things can be homemade and would be a fun troop project for anyone who likes to sew! An ideal size for beanbags would be approximately large enough to fit a teenager and the floor pillows  can be 28"x28" or larger. I really appreciate all and any help you have to offer! Please feel free to email me at stephani.sawicki@hotmail.com with any questions or suggestions you may have.

Thank You!

Stephani Sawicki

p.s. I am hoping to have this project finished by the end of June 2012.

[Leaders] Rockford Specific Flag Event for Veteran's

Hello leaders. I just wish to provide you with clarification on flag ceremonies for Veteran's. The council works with the veterans home and participates with the boy scouts for the flag postings at the cemetery at the vet's home.  If you have an interest in participating with this, go to the council web site or contact council

HOWEVER, Blythfiled Cemetery does a local version of the same thing. I received a call while I was out of town at a conference wishing to know if there is an interest by the Rockford scouts. SO, I would appreciate knowing if there is an interest. In summary:

The Cemetery works with the Veteran's to provide a formal flag ceremony with Veterans and scouts. Then there is a brief overview of the importance of remembering the veteran's and why Memorial day is important. I have found this experience very good for those girls eager to learn about their country on a different level from schools.

The Rockford event begins around 345pm following school on Thursday May 24, 2012.  Scouts should wear their sash/vest and look appropriate for the occasion.  I know that families have been welcomed in the the past. The folks at the cemetery also provide a hot dog cook out dinner. It is their way to recognize and honor the scouts and the occasion.

I have submitted the paperwork to council. There is no formal registration or fees for this event. But if you do acknowledge that you are attending; please come as the cemetery folks do use their own monies for the food and do not expect anything from us, other than our presence and respect toward the Veteran's who have passed.

Please let me know the number of scouts and adults who will be in attendance.

Please note that the bridging ceremony is also that day at 6:00/6:15ish.

Thank you, Kathleen

Pattie, Site Coordinator at CAB, is coordinating several troop camp opportunities at both CAB and Saki this summer take a look at what was just added to our website yesterday at http://www.gsmists.org/Pathways/troopcamps There are even horseback riding options at CAB during Troop Camp!
The Works Troop Camp is a three day/two night experience where camp trained staff is provided AND one of the adults can take the Troop Camp Leadership I course at no additional cost during your stay.  Check it out!
Adventure Troop Camp includes both camp staff planned activities AND troop planned/led activities for those who have activities they want to bring to and complete and camp.  Troop Camp trained volunteer is encouraged but not required for this option.
Choose your own Adventure Troop Camp is just that select your activities and sleeping accommodations.  You must supply your own troop camp trained volunteer.
The options in the Summer Troop Camp brochure contain great ideas for troops who haven't voted what to do with their cookie proceeds yet!
Please forward this e-mail to troop leaders thank you!
Pathways Manager Jackie Franklin is covering both the Grand Rapids and Muskegon Service Centers at the present time so any Pathways questions or requests (program/events/camp/etc) can be forwarded to her at jfranklin@gsmists.org.
This e-mail/information differs from the Resident Camp/Summer Camp Guide link http://www.gsmists.org/Pathways/camps I sent earlier this week.

[Leaders] Girl Scout Meeting minutes

We are looking to fill the roles of the following on our Service Unit Board.  Please consider one of these roles.  They are not huge time commitments and many hands make light work.

1.       Publicity Chair – Help get articles in the newspaper and help with photos for the website

2.       Recruitment Coordinator – Help place girls into troops and assist leaders as necessary

3.       Fall Product – Smaller of the two sales – Sarah Ek will mentor – Attend council training and then train and coordinate the sale at the Service Unit Level.

4.       Cookie Sale – Need two folks - Attend council training and then train and coordinate the sale at the Service Unit Level.

5.       School Rep – Need one for each school

We have a Service Unit Director, secretary, treasurer and website covered.

We are celebrating 100 years of girl scouts.  There is a new disc that council is selling to go behind your stars for this year.  They are 42 cents each or 12 for $5.00.  If your troop is not bridging check out Council for supplies and instructions on lots of different ceremonies your girls can choose from the end the year and get their pins and other rewards.

Thank you Mandy Dickinson for helping out with the Thinking Day!

Cake Decorating Event went well.  Mary from council did a Family Championship Presentation.  There is a Daisy scout that left behind her prize in the bathroom.  If that is one of your girls please let us know.  There are extra patches so if one of your girls didn’t get one please advise.

Bridging will be May 24th at the Freshman Center Cafeteria.  There is a stage in that space.  Please arrive at 6:15 and the event will start at 6:30.  Refreshments will be served after the ceremony.

Memorial Day Flags at Blyfield  Cemetery takes place at 4:00.  Volunteers do not need to register but need to have GS sash or vest on.  Hotdogs served after placement which takes about 30-40 minutes.

All leaders please join us for our May 14th  meeting at 6:30.  All paperwork will be on hand to fill out for the end of the year.  Forms will also be sent out about 2 weeks prior so you can review and start on the paperwork.  Pizza dinner will be provided.

Shirts from the service unit will be available for purchase.  Final details to come in the next few weeks.  All troops can purchase.  If you are marching in the start of summer parade on June 9th t-shirts are highly recommended.  There is no training for this parade.

Stephani Sawicki did a presentation tonight on her Gold Award Project.  She is building a learning library at a home for children who need a break from their home.  She is looking for donations.  Money to buy shelving material, paint, lamps etc.  If you have floor pillows, posters, floor lamps you would like to donate please let her know.  We will be collecting books for the library at our May 14th meeting.  If you can please look around your house to see if you have some spare children’s books for the library and bring a few.  You can also as a troop collect books as a service project and bring them to the May 14th meeting or contact Stephani for dropoff.  Stephani’s email is stephani.sawicki@hotmail.com.  Thank you for helping support her Gold Award Project.

GS Daycamp will take place from July 9 – 12.  If you can volunteer for a day or even a few more please contact Beverly Dickinson or Sue Passarelli.  The number of girls who can participate is based on the number of volunteers.  Again many hands make light work.  Tuesday night will be an overnight for the older girls attending.  Details to follow.  Nedra will be offering training again this year.  Details to come.

Again please consider volunteering for the Day Camp and our service unit.  Many hands make light work!

Have a good day!
